ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that OpenAI shows to users on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans, clearly labeled and kept separate from ChatGPT's answers. Any eligible business can buy them through the self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager with no minimum spend, paying per click (CPC), per thousand impressions (CPM) or bidding toward conversions. On October 5, 2026, OpenAI added a visual ad format and a much larger set of measurement partners.

Key facts: Ads started in a US pilot in February 2026 and now run in more than 60 countries. They reach Free and Go users only; paid plans stay ad-free. OpenAI recommends a starting bid of $3 to $5 per click, and advertisers report CPCs of roughly $3 to $22. A visual ad format starts testing in US image generation in late October 2026. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers and advertisers never see chat content.

What are ChatGPT ads?

ChatGPT ads are paid placements that appear around ChatGPT conversations, not inside the answer itself. The core format is a short, labeled unit with a brand icon and text shown below ChatGPT's response. OpenAI has repeatedly said that ads do not change what ChatGPT says, that conversations stay private from advertisers, and that users stay in control of their experience.

According to TechCrunch, the ad program exists to support ChatGPT's free and low-cost plans. OpenAI says ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion people a week.

How did ChatGPT ads get here? A 2026 timeline

ChatGPT went from a closed pilot to a global ad platform in eight months:

  • February 9, 2026: Ads pilot launches in the US for Free and Go users, with a high minimum commitment and CPM-only buying.
  • April 10, 2026: A self-serve Ads Manager starts rolling out to pilot advertisers, and the minimum drops to $50,000.
  • May 5, 2026: OpenAI opens the self-serve Ads Manager to all US businesses with no minimum spend, CPC bidding, a Conversions API and a measurement pixel.
  • June 2026: Conversion bidding arrives, still billed per click.
  • August 24, 2026: Ads go live in 31 European markets, targeted by conversation topic, general location and device rather than personal profiles.
  • August 31, 2026: Self-serve opens in Europe, India, the Middle East and North Africa. CNBC reported the ads business had passed a $1 billion annualized run rate.
  • September 16, 2026: OpenAI tests Sponsored Agents, which open a separate labeled chat with a brand's own agent, and adds HubSpot and Shopify integrations.
  • Late September 2026: Expansion to Southeast Asia and Taiwan takes coverage past 60 countries.
  • October 5, 2026: OpenAI announces visual ads and expanded measurement and brand-safety partners.

What ad formats does ChatGPT offer?

ChatGPT currently offers four formats, at different stages:

  • Text ads below answers: The standard unit. A brand icon, a short message and a link, shown under a relevant response. Available in all live markets.
  • Product feed ads: Creative generated automatically from a product catalog. Amazon now sells ChatGPT inventory, including product feed ads, through Amazon DSP on a CPC or CPM basis, according to Ignite Visibility's weekly roundup.
  • Sponsored Agents (testing): An ad that opens a separate, labeled conversation with the advertiser's own AI agent. Select US advertisers only.
  • Visual ads (testing): Image-led ads that show product inspiration, product use or experiences. They first appear while users generate images in ChatGPT, labeled and kept separate from the image being created. Testing starts later in October 2026 in the US with an initial group of advertisers.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

There is no published minimum spend for self-serve accounts. Pricing depends on the buying model:

  • CPC: OpenAI recommends a starting bid of $3 to $5 per click. Advertisers who have shared results report CPCs anywhere from about $3 to $22, according to Search Engine Journal.
  • CPM: The pilot charged a flat $60 per thousand impressions. Reported CPMs now range from about $25 to above $60 depending on category.
  • Conversion bidding: The system bids toward conversions but still bills per click. It requires conversion events flowing first.

OpenAI says it does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers or industries and does not guarantee any CPA, CPC or ROAS. Treat every figure above as early and directional.

How does the ChatGPT ads auction work?

ChatGPT ads run on a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. Two things follow:

  1. You rarely pay your full bid. You pay just above the next-highest effective bid, so set your bid at your true maximum.
  2. Relevance acts as a multiplier. An ad that fits the conversation closely can beat a higher bid with generic copy. Writing for the specific situation a user is in matters more than outbidding competitors.

Billing is postpay. A self-serve account is charged on a saved card each time spend reaches a payment threshold, and a failed payment can pause delivery.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

Ads appear only to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans do not see ads. If your buyers are heavy, paying ChatGPT users, such as many B2B decision-makers, your reachable audience is smaller than the headline user count suggests.

Advertisers cannot see what users type. Targeting relies on the conversation's topic, general location and device, plus customer-list audiences you upload. In Europe, ads are chosen from the current conversation rather than a personal profile, and German data protection authorities have raised concerns about personalized ads.

How can you measure ChatGPT ads?

Measurement was the biggest complaint from early advertisers. Digiday reported that some agencies saw conversions in their own systems that Ads Manager did not show, which kept budgets at test level.

The October 5 update was OpenAI's answer. As MediaPost detailed, advertisers now have:

  • First-party tools: The OpenAI pixel and Conversions API.
  • Data pipelines: Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp to send conversion data from existing systems.
  • Attribution partners: Including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin.
  • Full-funnel measurement: Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL.
  • Incrementality tests: Geo experiments with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic, which OpenAI describes as early-stage.
  • Brand suitability: Pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science that review placements without access to private conversations.

One early data point: Triple Whale reported that 93% of Portland Leather's visitors from ChatGPT ads were new to the brand.

ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads: what is different?

  • Conversation, not keyword: You bid into a conversation topic, not a typed query, so intent is inferred rather than declared.
  • No query visibility: You never see the prompts behind a click, so post-click measurement carries more weight.
  • One main placement: ChatGPT has far fewer ad slots and daily prompts than Google has searches, so the channel absorbs less budget.
  • Copy quality matters more: The relevance-weighted auction rewards ads written for a specific conversational moment.

Paid placement vs organic AI visibility: why you need both

ChatGPT ads and organic AI citations are separate systems. Because OpenAI says ads do not influence answers, buying ads will not make ChatGPT recommend your brand in its response. That depends on how well the web describes and cites you.

The two work together. Organic visibility shows whether ChatGPT names you when buyers ask for options; ads let you appear next to the conversations where it does not. MarkGrid's Model Share measures the organic side, showing how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot recommend you instead of a competitor, which tells you where paid placements would fill real gaps.
